Welcome to the Spire

Slay the Spire 2 is a roguelike deck-building game where you craft a unique deck, encounter bizarre creatures, and discover powerful relics as you climb the Spire. Each run is different, and learning from failure is part of the journey.

Core Mechanics

Energy and Cards

Each turn you receive a set amount of energy (usually 3) to play cards from your hand. Cards cost energy to play, and understanding how to efficiently spend your energy is key to success.

  • Attacks deal damage to enemies
  • Skills provide defensive options like Block, or utility effects
  • Powers like [[Demon Form]] or [[Noxious Fumes]] give lasting effects for the rest of combat

Block and Damage

Block prevents incoming damage on a per-turn basis. Unspent Block disappears at the start of your next turn (unless you have the [[keyword:Retain]] keyword). Balancing offense and defense is the core decision of every turn.

Keywords

Cards can have special keywords that change how they behave:

  • [[keyword:Exhaust]] — Card is removed from your deck for the rest of combat after playing
  • [[keyword:Ethereal]] — Card is exhausted if still in your hand at end of turn
  • [[keyword:Innate]] — Card is always in your opening hand
  • [[keyword:Retain]] — Card stays in your hand instead of being discarded at end of turn

Relics

Relics are passive items that provide ongoing bonuses throughout your run. You'll find them after elite fights, in shops, and from events. Building synergies between your relics and your deck is a major part of strategy.

The Characters

  • [[character:Ironclad]] — A warrior with high HP and [[relic:Burning Blood]] for healing. Great for beginners.
  • [[character:Silent]] — A rogue who uses [[power:Poison]] and [[Shiv]]s for damage. More complex but very powerful.
  • [[character:Defect]] — A robot that uses Orbs ([[orb:Lightning]], [[orb:Frost]], [[orb:Dark]]) for passive effects.
  • [[character:Necrobinder]] — Summons minions and uses Souls for dark strategies.
  • [[character:Regent]] — Uses Stars as an alternative resource alongside energy.

Tips for New Players

  1. Don't take every card — A smaller, focused deck is usually better than a large unfocused one
  2. Block is important — Don't neglect defense. Dying is the worst outcome
  3. Read your relics — Many relics change how you should play. Adapt your strategy
  4. Elite fights are worth it — The relics from elites are powerful, but know your limits
  5. Learn enemy patterns — Enemies telegraph their moves with intents. Use this information
  6. Visit the shop — The merchant sells cards, relics, and [[potion:Fruit Juice]]. Card removal costs 75 gold and goes up by 25 each time
