Understanding Encounters and Enemy Patterns
A guide to reading enemy intents, understanding encounter compositions, and developing strategies for each act's challenges.
Reading Enemy Intents
Every enemy in Slay the Spire 2 telegraphs their next action through intent icons displayed above their head. Learning to read and react to these intents is fundamental to consistent play.
Intent Types
- Sword — The enemy will attack. The number shows how much damage
- Shield — The enemy will gain Block or buff itself
- Skull — The enemy will apply a debuff
- Question Mark — The enemy is performing an unknown or special action
Act-by-Act Breakdown
Act 1
Act 1 enemies are relatively straightforward but can punish unrefined decks. Focus on adding damage cards early to handle hallway fights efficiently.
Watch out for: Multi-hit attacks that bypass small amounts of Block, and enemies that scale if fights go too long.
Act 2
The difficulty spikes significantly in Act 2. Enemies hit harder, have more HP, and use more complex patterns. You'll need both scaling damage and reliable defense.
Watch out for: Artifact charges that prevent debuffs, enemies that split or summon reinforcements.
Act 3
Act 3 enemies assume you have a functional deck. Fights are long and punishing. Without scaling (Strength, multi-hit, Powers), you'll struggle.
Watch out for: Enemies with massive HP pools, fights that punish slow play with escalating damage.
Boss Preparation
Before each boss fight, consider:
- Do you have enough damage? Bosses have large HP pools
- Can you handle their signature mechanic? Each boss has a unique challenge
- Is your deck fast enough? Some bosses punish slow setups
- Do you have answers to debuffs? Many bosses apply nasty debuffs
